IPv6 adoption is speeding up
The adoption of IPv6 is becoming a U.S. phenomenon, both Comcast and Verizon Wireless are moving head with there own NGN IPv6 networks and migrating from IPv4 to IPv6. According to the American Registry for Internet Numbers (ARIN), U.S. based service providers interest in IPv6 over IPv4 addresses continues to ramp up.
During the first nine months of this year, ARIN said it received 300 requests from service providers for IPv6 address space blocks. Conversely, ARIN received only 250 IPv6 requests throughout 2007 and 2008. "We're seeing an uptick in IPv6 address space requests; it's a very significant growth rate," says John Curran, president and CEO of ARIN. "We've seen a slight slowdown in IPv4 address space requests... It's probably dropped off 10 percent or 20 percent year over year."

Comcast Embraces IPv6
With wholesale availability of IPv6 on the Comcast network, the next steps include making IPv6 available to Comcast's business and residential broadband customers.
"Comcast plans to enter into broadband IPv6 technical trials later this year and into 2010," Tishgart said. "Planning for general deployment is underway."
There are some key challenges however that will need to be overcome before IPv6 becomes pervasive in the residential broadband space. One of those challenges is the availability of home networking gear that supports IPv6.
"Much of the equipment that broadband subscribers use at home today may not support IPv6," Tishgart said. "The advancement of IPv6 in the broadband home networking space will be critical to the long term deployment of IPv6."

Why IPv6 Is Like Broccoli
What's wrong with IPv6, what's right, and why none of us really has a choice, according to supporters.
"After IPv4 runs out, it's not the same as running out of oil, where there would be no cars running the next morning," said Alain Durand, director of IPv6 architecture and Internet governance in Comcast's Office of the CTO. "Everything that has been deployed will still work, so don't panic."
